Dr. Dawn Lewis Sutherland is an award-winning author, scholar, speaker, and educator specializing in Old Testament and Ancient Near Eastern studies, theological anthropology, and philosophy. She holds a Ph.D. with high distinction in Bible Exposition, an M.Div. in Christian Apologetics, and a B.S. in Theology and Religion. She currently serves as Adjunct Faculty in the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity at Liberty University. Her work bridges the study of ancient texts and cultures with contemporary theological, philosophical, and ethical concerns.

Committed to fostering a biblical vision of equality, Dr. Sutherland focuses on equipping others with deep scriptural insights, encouraging critical engagement with the Bible, and advocating for leadership inclusivity within the church and academy. Her teaching and writing emphasize faithful interpretation of Scripture and affirm the inherent dignity and value of all people.

Dawn’s greatest source of inspiration is her husband, Louis, a retired U.S. Army officer who served in Special Forces and continues to contribute through technological advancements in the civilian sector. Louis encouraged her to return to school, pursue ministry, and write her forthcoming book. He is her hero and unwavering support through every step of her journey.

Beyond her academic pursuits, water (the ocean or the lake) is Dawn’s happy place, where she finds joy, peace, and inspiration. Whether spending time on the lake or connecting with family, she treasures the tranquility it provides. Her younger children, Selah and Samuel Isaiah (Sami), are musically talented—Selah excels at the trumpet, and Sami plays the French horn, is an award-winning author recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and enjoys archery. Dawn’s adult children, Robert (Ronnie) and Katie, have established themselves in their respective fields. Ronnie, a University of Virginia graduate in psychology, conducts research supporting underrecognized autistic groups (read his work here). Katie is happily married, serves in the medical field, and is pursuing her passion for meteorology.

Dr. Sutherland is the author of the forthcoming book From Babel to AI: Idolatry, Transhumanism, and the Crisis of Imago Dei (Wipf and Stock), which examines the theological and ethical challenges posed by modern technologies and their implications for human identity and purpose. Her research encompasses creation theology, biblical anthropology, and the relevance of Scripture in addressing contemporary dilemmas.

Passionate about equipping others to engage critically with Scripture, Dr. Sutherland contributes to both academic and faith-based conversations, offering thoughtful insights that connect the ancient world to modern contexts with clarity and depth.
