Dr. Dawn Lewis Sutherland is an award-winning scholar, author, speaker, and educator whose work sits at the intersection of biblical theology, philosophy of religion, and Christian ethics. She specializes in Old Testament and ancient Near Eastern studies, theological anthropology, and the ethics of technology, with a sustained focus on empathy, the imago Dei, and the protection of embodied human life in a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, data systems, and transhumanist ambition.

She is the recipient of the InterVarsity Press (IVP) and Tyndale 2025 Early-Career Philosopher of Religion of the Year award. Her publications include The Sin of Withholding Empathy (Eerdmans, forthcoming), From Babel to AI: Idolatry, Transhumanism, and the Crisis of Imago Dei (Wipf and Stock), the companion volume From Babel to AI: A Devotional Awakening to Faith, Identity, and Technology (Wipf and Stock), and peer-reviewed and popular essays on personhood, technology, and women in Scripture. Her research has been presented internationally, including at Uppsala University and the Tyndale Fellowship Conference in the United Kingdom, and is endorsed by the International Jacques Ellul Society.
Dr. Sutherland holds a Ph.D. with high distinction in Bible Exposition, an M.Div. in Christian Apologetics, and a B.S. in Religion: Biblical and Theological Studies, and is currently pursuing a second doctorate in Law and Public Policy. She serves as Adjunct Faculty in the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity at Liberty University, where she teaches and mentors undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students in Bible Exposition, Biblical Languages, Theology, and Applied Apologetics..
Beyond the classroom, she leads professional development seminars on empathy, personhood, artificial intelligence, and pedagogy for academic, ecclesial, and institutional audiences, and serves as a strategic consultant on contract law, proposals, and ethics for high-tech U.S. defense firms. She is an active member of the Tyndale Fellowship, the Institute for Biblical Research, the Society of Biblical Literature, the Evangelical Theological Society, the American Academy of Religion, the Society for Christian Ethics, the Biblical Archaeological Society, and the American Bar Association.
